Charleston Mobile Application Development Competition

IBM Master the Mainframe Contest

In case you weren't already aware, here's a brief announcement for this year's contest, which begins at noon EST on Monday, October 3: ************ Registration is now open for the 2011 IBM Master the Mainframe Contest, with over $35,000 in prizes up for grabs! The major focus of the contest is to introduce students to an area of the computer field that they may not have had much experience with, and which is currently in a long-term hiring phase. If you think your students might be interested in checking it out (IBM designed the contest to be NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY), please forward this announcement to them. NSF East Asia and Pacific Fellowships

  NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC SUMMER INSTITUTES FOR U.S. GRADUATE STUDENTS - 2012 APPLICATION NOW OPEN (Link: www.nsfsi.org )      The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) is a flagship international fellowship program for developing the next generation of globally  engaged U.S. scientists and engineers knowledgeable about the Asian and Pacific regions. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location. The 2012 application is now open and will close at 5:00 pm proposer’s local time on November 9, 2011.  Application instructions are available online at www.nsfsi.org. Beginning of Salary Range — $48,994 Length of Service — 12 months*  Major Responsibilities: (1)  Develop and design new lessons, exhibits and instructional opportunities for students and the public by bringing together STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) partners from education and industry; (2)  Teach exemplary inquiry-based lessons daily in STEM topics for the students of Greenville County and other locations visiting the center; (3)   Develop and present teacher in-service workshops and methods/content courses in STEM areas;  (4)  Teach and coordinate programs and supervise staff and volunteers in STEM programs for the public including: Electronic Field Trips, FIRST LEGO League, Advanced Robotics, Summer Camps, 2nd Saturdays, Group Programs, Special Programs, etc.; (5)   Assist in teaching and technical maintenance in the planetarium and observatory;  (6)   Serve as a content specialist and resource agent for STEM resources to teachers, students, and public; (7)   Assist in fundraising for the new STEM program through grants, donations, and acquisitions; (8)   Daily schedule:  8:30am -5:00pm.  *Also includes eight Saturdays per year and after-hours events as needed; and (9)   Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.   Qualifications: (1) Bachelor of Science Degree in the field of science, engineering, or education, with Master’s Degree, preferred; (2) minimum of 5 years experience in field of science education with students in a formal (school) or informal (museum) setting;  (3) proven ability in designing curriculum and/or programs for students; (4) dynamic, out-going personality and proven ability to develop and cultivate community and industry partnerships; (5) ability to relate well to elementary, middle, and high school students;  (6) strong organizational and interpersonal skills; (7) *demonstrable computer skills in word, excel, outlook and comfortable using other software.  * A computer test will be given to interview candidates.
