COLLOQUIUM Department of Computer Science and Engineering University of South Carolina Innovation and Cloud Computing Juan E. Vargas Microsoft Technology and Policy Group Date: November 18, 2011 Time: 11:00-noon Place: Swearingen 1C01 (Amoco Hall) Abstract In this presentation I will talk about innovation in general and cloud computing. I will highlight the different types of cloud services in terms of tools and practices for application development. I will also cover Windows Azure development, and will mention examples of what some faculty and researchers are doing with Azure in several scientific endeavors. Juan E. Vargas serves as Principal Research Manager for Microsoft Technology and Policy group (TPG). He was the University Relations Manager at Google from 2007 to 2009. From 1988 to 2007 Juan was a faculty member of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina, where he taught and conducted research on data mining, Bayesian networks, embedded and distributed systems, sensor networks, and biomedical engineering. His research is published in more than 60 articles, several book chapters, and many conferences. He earned a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, a master's degree from the Center for Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute, Mexico, CINVESTAV-IPN (that included the basic sciences of the medical program), and a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Juan received the 2008 Gold Nugget Award from UTEP, given each year to exceptional graduates from the College of Engineering.
