My research is based around CSDTs (Culturally Situated Design Tools). A broad overview of what is a CSDT is mathematical lessons derived from a peoples' culture using computer programs and other gateway tools of education. With my research, I am aiming to correlate Gullah fishing nets to plotting and mathematical usage of the coordinate plane.
One of the goals of CSDTs is for them to become more accepted into curricula across the nation. A driving reason for this is because of low standardized math scores among minority children (comparable to their white counterparts). In some isolated and few trials, the usage of CSDTs in educational lessons have improved these test scores but more wide scaled studies and CSDT placement across the nation is needed to see the actual yield result.
