Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Procedures and Criteria for Annual, Third-Year, and Post-Tenure Reviews

March 2005

Procedure and Criteria:  All reviews are based on the requirements of the Faculty Manual and the Computer Science and Engineering criteria and procedure for tenure and promotion found at http://www.cse.sc.edu/~stephens/T&P/CSE-T&P-2002-Final.htm.

Annual Evaluations are normally conducted in the April 15 to May 15 timeframe.  Faculty members submit annual files to the T&P Committee by April 15; the committee targets May 15 for completion of an evaluation letter to each faculty member, with a copy to the chair.  As required by the Faculty Manual, annual evaluations include peer-teaching reviews for untenured faculty members.

Third-Year Reviews are normally conducted in the March 15 to April 15 time frame (November 1 to November 30 for mid-year decisions).  These timeframes are necessitated by university deadlines of May 15 and December 15, respectively.  The faculty member’s third-year file follows the university’s T&P format.  The committee’s evaluation and recommendation for reappointment are forwarded directly to the department chairman.

Post-Tenure Reviews are conducted in the February 15 to March 15 timeframe in accordance with the UCS Post-Tenure Review calendar.  Any development plans for improvement are due in the Provost’s office by April 1.  Complete procedure and criteria for post-tenure review are found at http://www.cse.sc.edu/~stephens/T&P/CSE-PTR.htm.  Faculty members undergoing post-tenure review will be given a separate annual evaluation by the committee.

Annual Files for Cases of Third-Year and Post Tenure.  Faculty members who undergo third-year or post tenure reviews may choose from the following options for submitting annual files:

(1)   Third-year or post-tenure files only

(2)   Third-year or post-tenure files supplemented by a written memorandum for last minute updates

(3)   A separate, annual summary report.

Graduate School Retention.  A faculty member is considered for retention on the Graduate School Faculty at third-year, tenure and promotion, and post tenure reviews.  Please see

http://www.cse.sc.edu/~stephens/T&P/GraduateRetention.htm for additional information.
