Department of Computer Science and Engineering

Procedures and Criteria for

Reviewing and Retaining Members on the

Graduate School Faculty

Approved: August 20, 2003

Procedure:  All tenured and tenure-track faculty members in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering are reviewed periodically for retention on the Graduate School faculty.  Retention reviews coincide with the third-year, tenure and promotion, and post-tenure reviews conducted by the department’s Tenure and Promotion Committee.  This document supplements the general guidelines provided by the Graduate School.

As part of the existing review process, the unit Tenure and Promotion Committee routinely assesses each faculty member’s accomplishments relative to the research and graduate teaching components of the T&P criteria.  A positive review by a majority of the T&P committee is needed for retention on the Graduate School faculty.  If the committee votes for retention, the result is recorded in the T&P Committee’s summary review letter (required by existing procedures), and no further action is taken.  In the case of an unsatisfactory review, the committee will inform the department chair.  If local appeals are denied, the result is forwarded to the Graduate School.

A person receiving a negative recommendation may request the T&P Committee to reconsider its recommendation by providing additional documentary evidence.  The final decision to retain or deny a request for retention on the Graduate School Faculty rests with the Graduate Dean in consultation with the Graduate Council.  Appeals of decisions to deny membership on the Graduate Faculty may be made to the Membership Committee of the Graduate Council.  Persons who have been denied membership on the Graduate School faculty may reapply to the unit after one year.

Criteria:  The following items, elaborated in the unit’s criteria for tenure and promotion and post-tenure review, are considered in the decision for membership and retention on the Graduate School faculty:

  • Graduate Teaching Effectiveness
  • Graduate Student Advisement
  • Scholarship
