Cyber Security

What it's all about?  – Increasing awareness of computer security – focusing on personal computers and the use of Internet – demonstrating the ease with which computer systems and communication messages can be compromised.  The students will learn about available tools and techniques to strengthen security.

Activities:

1. Hide a message: Experiment with one of the easiest to use encryption/decryption tools.

·         Try to break a simple encrypted text… can’t do it?

·         Here is how it was encrypted.  Try again.

·         Now, have fun with some harder to break encryption using an online tool.

Hint: copy and paste the encrypted text into the ciphertext window of the online tool.  Change the number of lines shifted until you see the joke.

2. Are you safe from phishing?  Phishing usually involves sending an e-mail to a user in an attempt to trick the user to visit a web site.   The web site claims to be a legitimate site where the user is asked to update personal information, such as passwords, credit card number, or bank account number.  However, the web site is fake and it was created to steal the user’s information.

·         Here is an online game to teach you to identify bogus web sites.  The tool was designed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University.

·         Learn about Computer Security while having fun reading cartoons. SecurityCartoon.com will educate you about malware, spoofing, phishing, pharming, and other interesting security topics.  Take a look!

3. Master of Security: ” The goal of the game is to protect your software from harmful threats: adware, spyware, viruses, etc.  To kill security invaders you must build security shields on the game desktop. All invaders, except viruses, can’t go through the shields." (from http://www.kongregate.com/games/gmentat/master-of-security ).  Click here to play the game.

4. Try it at home:  secure your home personal computer:  Are you using email?  Do you download files?  Are you participating in a social network?  YOUR COMPUTER IS AT HIGH RISK TO BE ATTACKED!  You need to have Administrator privileges in your machine to try the following links.  Here are some useful links you can follow to learn more about securing your personal computer:

·         4 steps to protect your computer, http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/default.mspx

·         Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer, http://www.microsoft.com/technet/Security/tools/mbsahome.mspx

HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE!

You have worked hard and deserve some rest.  The following online-games  were developed by USC students in Dr. Tang’s classes and by high school students during summer camps.
