The John H. Fain Computer Science Scholarship
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is very pleased to announce the
establishment of the John H. Fain Computer Science Scholarship,
made possible by a very generous gift from John Fain, one of USC's
very first graduates in Computer Science.
Graduating in 1970, Fain spent several years with Duke Energy and then in contract programming.
In 1979, he founded Metro Information Services, Inc., a company that grew to employ
3,600 people in 45 offices throughout the United States.
The Fain Scholarship is intended to provide an incentive for computer science majors
to become entrepreneurs.
Up to four seniors each year will be awarded $5,000, provided they meet GPA and similar
requirements and, most importantly, have pursued coursework, including entrepreneurship
courses in the Moore School of Business, that would set them on a career path toward
creating their own businesses in the computing industry.
Probably more than any other field of endeavor, the entrepreneurial spirit has permeated
computer science from the very beginning, and the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering is very pleased to be able to offer these scholarships to deserving
seniors eager to join the ranks of successful business men and women in computing.
